What Do You Do When You Find Baby Kittens?
If the mother is still around:
The kittens are curled up with each other.
They are not crying, or in some other distress.
They are clean and their fur is smooth.
At this point leave them alone for now and keep checking on them to make sure the situation has not changed. Mom may be hiding waiting for you to leave.
If there is not any sign of the mother:
The kittens will be crawling around.
Almost all the time they will be crying because they are hungry.
They will be dirty and the fur will be matted.
You might very well find dirt in the mouth.
Depending on how long they have been without their mother, they may be lethargic or less responsive.
Feel the body to see if they are cold.
These situations will require you get the babies immediately.
The first thing you must do is get their body temperature up. Babies cannot regulate their temperature at this stage. They need mom to do this for them.
Hand warmers like hunters use, heating pads, rice socks heated in the microwave or even warm water in a Ziploc bag can be used.
They should not eat until the body temperature is more normal. This could cause the kitten to get sick.
If the kitten is lethargic or unresponsive you can take a drop of Caro syrup or honey and put it on the tongue or the inside of the cheek. This may give the kitten some energy.

Help Us Find Loving Homes for Kittens
To help orphan baby kittens survive after the loss of the mother by bottle feeding and caring for their needs until they are old enough to be put up for adoption. We specialize in rescuing babies still nursing from the mother. We will take in the babies if the mother is not around any longer to provide the care. If the kitten is old enough to eat solid food, they would be considered too old for our agency to take in, in most cases.
